I position my teaching philosophy on the conviction that 21st century policymaking requires teachers and students who can critically navigate the intersection of communication, community engagement, public policy, and technology. My teaching approach is deeply rooted in the principles of publicly engaged scholarship that have been the foundation of my own personal and educational journey. I was introduced to this principle during my secondary education in a program called “creativity, action, service,” CAS for short, which required students to develop skills and serve their community through problem solving and reciprocal engagement. This form of publicly engaged scholarship which emphasizes the co-creation of knowledge, commitment to the public good, academic rigor, and integrity is how I position my teaching. I see my role as a bridge between the theoretical foundations of public administration and policy as well as the complex realities and lived experiences of my students inside and outside of the classroom. In my classroom, I strive to create an inclusive and dynamic learning environment where students will develop the analytical skills, ethical frameworks, and conceptual knowledge needed to make policy and use data and digital tools responsibly for social good. My goal is to empower my students to understand the policy process and become evidence-based and data-driven innovative problem-solvers.
